Itanagar: A double-double Bailey bridge over Ngopok Korong (river) along Mebo-Dhola road under Mebo sub-division in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang district collapsed on Wednesday, disrupting the surface communication along the said road.

The incident happened when a boulder-laden dumper truck with three people on board was passing through the ‘weak’ bridge. Fortunately, all three people including the driver escaped with minor injuries, sources said.

An official of the state Public Works Department (PWD), meanwhile, informed that a diversion has been made from the riverside for the traffic movement.

“Heavy vehicles are already using the river route,” Neki Ratan, assistant engineer of PWD Mebo Division, said. The AE informed that a bamboo bridge will be constructed at the location for light vehicles.

“We will also channelize the depth of the river using an earthmover. The bamboo bridge will be ready by tomorrow,” she said while adding that men and materials are ready.

The AE, however, could not say how much time it will take for the department to repair the collapsed bridge. The department will send a proposal to the higher authorities for immediate restoration of the Bailey bridge, she informed.
