Athletics U20 Worlds: Selva Thirumaran wins silver in triple jump

From Thirumaran’s six attempts, only the first three were valid and the rest were fouls. The 17-year-old’s medal-winning effort came in the second jump - the other two measured 16.11m and 16.09m.

Cali (Colombia): India’s Selva P Thirumaran clinched a silver medal in the men’s triple jump at the World Athletics U20 Championships, taking India’s tally to three.

With a personal best leap of 16.15m on Friday, Thirumaran finished behind Jaydon Hibbert of Jamaica, who won the gold medal with a championship record effort of 17.27m. Viktor Morozov of Estonia took the bronze with 16.13m.

Earlier, India won a bronze medal in the 4×400 mixed relay and a silver in the women’s 400m with Rupal Chaudhary becoming the first Indian to win two medals in a single edition of the world championships.

The Indian women’s 4x400m relay team comprises Summy, Priya Mohan, Rajitha Kunja and Rupal Chaudhary has qualified for the 4x400m relay finals with a national U20 record time of 3:34.18.

A 31-member Indian team was sent to Cali for the junior world championships. India finished with three medals last year in Nairobi – two silvers and a bronze.
