New Delhi: The average age of the assemblies in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Manipur, and the number of women legislators has gone up, an analysis of the poll results said.
According to PRS Legislative Research, the proportion of MLAs aged 55 years or below has decreased to 59.5 percent in 2022 from 64.7 percent in 2017. Out of the 403 MLAs, 47 of the elected MLAs in UP are women, compared to 42 in 2017. This has brought women representation in the Assembly to 11.7 percent.
The number of MLAs with at least a Bachelor’s degree has increased from 72.7 percent in 2017 to 75.9 percent in 2022.
In Uttarakhand, three political parties are represented in the 70-member House along with two independent MLAs. The proportion of MLAs aged 55 years or below has decreased to 51 percent in 2022 from 61 percent in 2017.
The number of women MLAs has increased from 5 in 2017 to 8 in 2022 in the House of 70 MLAs. The number of MLAs with at least a Bachelor’s degree has reduced from 77% in 2017 to 68 in 2022.
In Manipur, six political parties are represented in the 60-member House along with three independent MLAs. The proportion of MLAs aged 55 years or below has decreased to 55 percent in 2022 from 71.7 percent in 2017.
The number of women MLAs has doubled to 4 in 2022 from 2 in 2017. With this, 6.7 percent of the MLAs in 2022 are women as compared to 3.3 percent in 2017. In the incoming 12th Assembly, 76.6 percent of the elected MLAs have at least a Bachelor’s degree. This is slightly lower than the 68.4 percent in 2017.
