Imphal: World Nature Conservation Day is observed annually to focus attention on the imperative need to preserve natural resources, protect fragile ecosystems, and mitigate the severe impacts of global warming caused by environmental degradation. Marking this occasion with a thrust on community participation and ecological balance, Assam Rifles organized extensive environmental awareness and tree plantation drives in Bishnupur and Chandel districts of Manipur on 28 July 2026.
At Maibam Lotpa Chingning Awang Leikai in Bishnupur district, Assam Rifles conducted an interactive environmental awareness session followed by a sapling plantation drive. The interactive session sensitized participants on the vital role of the youth in conserving natural resources, the necessity of preserving nature for coming generations, and the harmful effects of global warming arising from resource depletion. The event saw active participation from approximately 50 youths from the Maibam Sunlight Youth Club alongside 10 local women. Joining forces with the youth and women community members, Assam Rifles personnel planted nearly 200 saplings, including fruit-bearing and shade trees such as mango, jamun, and eucalyptus, symbolizing a collective commitment towards environmental sustainability.
Extending the ecological initiative, Assam Rifles simultaneously spearheaded a large-scale tree plantation drive across Modi, Larong, Machi, and Chandel in Chandel district. The campaign mobilized over 500 participants, bringing together Assam Rifles personnel, local students, teachers, and residents. To enhance regional green cover, reinforce biodiversity, and foster long-term ecological balance, more than 800 saplings were planted at suitable locations across the district. Participants were educated on afforestation practices, natural resource conservation, and everyday eco-friendly habits, with an emphasis on taking personal ownership to nurture the newly planted saplings to maturity.
By combining ecological action with civil-military collaboration, these coordinated events successfully reinforced the shared responsibility of protecting natural heritage while inspiring active community participation towards a greener future.
