Assam: Former deputy speaker Dilip Paul quits BJP; to contest as independent from Silchar

Guwahati: Former Assam Assembly deputy speaker and BJP’s sitting Silchar MLA Dilip Kumar Paul on Wednesday resigned from the party after being denied the ticket to contest the upcoming assembly elections in the state.

The BJP has fielded Dipayan Chakraborty, one of the ‘close confidantes’ of Silchar Lok Sabha MP Dr. Rajdeep Roy.

Dilip Kumar Paul will now contest election as an independent candidate.

Paul, the two-time MLA from Silchar Assembly constituency, was unanimously elected as the deputy speaker of the Assam Assembly on June 3, 2016.

But he submitted his resignation letter to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on May 8, 2018 requesting him to relieve from the post of deputy speaker.

Meanwhile, another sitting MLA Shiladitya Dev from Hojai was on his way out from the saffron party after being denied ticket to contest in the upcoming elections.
