Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswar Sarma rejects allegation of him taking help from Kuki militant groups to secure wins for the BJP during  the 2017 Manipur assembly election and 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

“Some baseless allegations have been levelled in recent social media posts on understanding with some UG leaders of Manipur. It’s reiterated that there is no engagement with any such elements,” Sarma said in a statement on Tuesday.

Twenty-five armed groups of Kuki/Zomi/Hmar ethnic communities are under SoO in Manipur, signed in 2008 by the then Congress government. The appeal mentioned in the social media post is written by the self styled Chairman of one of these groups who was under investigation for his involvement in the arms pilferage case from the Kote of 2nd MR in 2018, the Assam chief minister  disclosed.

Himanta said the Biren Singh-led BJP government transferred the case to NIA for investigation, indicating its seriousness in such cases.

The involved persons were chargesheeted by the NIA, which negates any suspicion of any compromise as alleged in the appeal, the chief minister said.

The said appeal is a desperate attempt by an individual to save himself. Any insinuation of understanding with the said individual is baseless and devoid of merit, Himanta concluded.

It may be noted that the chairman of the Kuki militant out, UKLF, earlier this month, alleged in a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, that his organisation and another Kuki group rendered help to BJP candidates in winning Assembly elections. He further alleged that an agreement was made with Ram Madav, senior BJP leader and Assam chief minister Himanta Biswar Sarma.   He alleged that they rendered help to the BJP even in the 2019 Lok Sabha election.
