Guwahati:  The Assam cabinet has given its nod to establish a commission that will enhance the delivery of public services, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The BJP-led government had promised to create one lakh jobs before the elections, and the results of examinations to recruit over 50,000 people to the government sector will be declared on May 6, he added.

Sarma informed the media after the meeting that the cabinet had approved the Assam Right to Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2023.

The commission will be an independent quasi-judicial body with a chief commissioner and three other members. Its role will be to suggest disciplinary action against public servants who persistently fail to provide the services they were notified to provide within a specific time frame.

The CM expressed confidence that the establishment of the commission would make Assam a model state in terms of public service delivery. He also announced that appointments to 51,397 government posts would be issued to successful candidates between May 10 and May 20, with over 14,000 jobs in Grade IV, more than 11,000 jobs in Grade III, over 14,000 jobs in the education department, and nearly 6,000 jobs in the police force.

Furthermore, the Tea Tribes Welfare department and directorate will be renamed Tea Tribes and Adivasi Welfare, Sarma said.

The council of ministers also agreed to condone the age of all over-aged candidates who were permitted to take written examinations administered by the Health and Family Welfare department on January 10, 2021, and May 29, 2022.

Additionally, the meeting approved numerous developmental projects to strengthen roads, bridges, educational institutions, and other infrastructure in the Udalguri district.
