Arunachal records highest single-day spike of 668 Covid cases

Itanagar: In a new high, Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday registered the highest single-day surge in Covid19 infection as 668 people tested positive for the virus, and a fresh Covid casualty in the form of a tourist, taking state’s death toll to 283, a senior health official said.

The latest Covid victim, a 60-year-old male visitor from neighbouring Assam’s Guwahati, breathed his last at DCHC, Tawang one-and-a-half-hour after being admitted at the facility last Sunday night.

The deceased’s antecedent cause was said to be ‘ascend to high altitude without acclimatization’ and immediate cause being ‘high altitude Pulmonary Oedema with Covid19’. Reportedly, he had taken both doses of the Covid vaccine.

Meanwhile, with the addition of the fresh cases, the hilly state’s tally of confirmed cases went past the 60,000-mark to be at 60,072, while its active caseload mounted to 3313, the official said. Of the new infections, Itanagar Capital Complex reported the highest 284 cases, followed by Lower Dibang Valley at 44, Changlang (39), Papum Pare and Lower Subansiri (31 each), Namsai (30), West Kameng (28), East Siang (27), Lohit (26), and Tawang and West Siang (23 each). 317 of the total cases were found to be asymptomatic and 351 symptomatic, he said, adding that the day’s positivity rate was 29.96 per cent.

A total of 2229 samples were tested for Covid19 during the last 24 hours which took the state’s cumulative count to 12,28,823. On the other hand, the state saw 288 people getting cured of the disease during the past 24 hours, thereby taking the total number of recoveries to 56,476, he said.

On the inoculation front, Arunachal administered altogether 3844 vaccine shots to its eligible citizens in the last 24 hours, taking the cumulative vaccination coverage to over 15.64 lakh.
