Itanagar: In a major drug haul, the police have recovered 147 grams of contraband suspected to be brown sugar and arrested four persons, including a woman, for their alleged involvement in the illicit drug trade, a senior police said on Tuesday.
East Siang SP Sumit Kumar Jha said that on Sunday, an information was received from Aalo Police Station OC that as per local sources, some boys from Aalo have gone to Pasighat to receive contraband drugs from a lady peddler. Accordingly, Pasighat Police led by OC Inspector Tabin Padung with his team rushed to the spot.
Developing further on that input, the SP formed three teams to place nakas and conduct the raids, while Women Against Social Evil (WASE) president Yamik Dulom Darang was also contacted to reach near Sirki petrol pump with her team to act as independent witness.
A woman namely, Nung Padung alias Yage Yompang who was coming from Rengging side towards Pasighat by a car was intercepted by police team near Sirki petrol pump where a woman cop identified her by face and alerted the team that she had been arrested earlier in NDPS cases last year. The vehicle was searched and a cash amount of Rs 1,05,630 suspected to be the sale proceeds was recovered and her Santro car seized, the SP said.
During initial grilling, she disclosed that she had delivered the contraband to three boys, who had already left for Aalo by their respective vehicles (one of them was on scooty, one on motorbike and the third one was driving a Bolero car). Then the OCs of PS Pasighat and WPS Pasighat alongwith their teams led by DySP(P) Taba Biroy chased them till Aalo.
In the meantime, Pangin PS OC Inspector T Pasar and Aalo PS OC Inspector Duto Bagra were given specific details about all three vehicles and subsequently, two vehicles were intercepted by the Aalo PS OC and one by the OC, Pangin. A case was also registered at Aalo PS.
Then all three alleged peddlers along with the main accused lady drug peddler were brought to Pasighat PS. After detailed interrogation, a police team along with WASE members and a magistrate went ahead for house search of Nung Padung alias Yage Yompang at Lower Banskota, Pasighat from where 10 soap cases containing contraband drugs which were hidden in an abandoned toilet were recovered and seized.
In total, 147 grams of contraband suspected to be brown sugar was recovered, which is the highest ever drug haul in East Siang district till date. “This 10-12 hours long operation has given a big blow to the inter-district supply chain in Arunachal Pradesh. Further investigation to establish backward linkages is on,” the SP said.
