Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig (Retd) Dr. BD Mishra on Thursday stressed strengthening the institution of the ombudsman, Lokayukta, in the state – both in terms of functional autonomy and availability of manpower to ‘effectively’ tackle the wicked problem of corruption.

The Governor made this avowal when the Arunachal Pradesh Lokayukta Chairperson Justice (Retd) Prasanta Kumar Saikia, accompanied by Lokayukta Member Yeshi Tsering, IAS (Retd) called on him at the Raj Bhavan here.

During the meeting, the Governor said, “Corruption is perceived as a major crisis capable of jeopardizing society’s stability and protection. It undermines the values of democracy and morality by threatening the nation’s social, economic, and political development.”

He emphatically said that to tackle the problem of corruption, the institution of the ombudsman, i.e. Lokayukta should be strengthened – both in terms of functional autonomy and availability of manpower.

Sharing his concern about corruption and stressing probity in public life, the Governor said that there is a need for decentralization of institutions with appropriate accountability mechanisms, to avoid the concentration of too much power in any institution or authority.

Earlier, Justice (Retd) Saikia submitted the Annual Report of the Arunachal Pradesh Lokayukta to the Governor, a communique from the Raj Bhavan said.
