Imphal: Bijaya Yumlembam, All India Radio, Imphal’s program executive (coordination) breathed her last on Wednesday due to Covid-19.
Bijaya was diagnosed with the coronavirus for the last few weeks and was self-isolation at home. She was moved to Shija Hospital after her condition deteriorated nearly two weeks ago.
She was 60.
Born at Uripok Bachaspati Leikai, Bijaya did her schooling at the Little Flower School, Imphal and passed graduation from the Panjab University.
She joined the All India Radio, Imphal as Transmission Executive on 19 April, 1989. She was promoted to Program Executive in 2003 (October). Before joining AIR, Imphal, Bijaya was employed as Casual announcer of Western Music. She also worked at AIR, Silchar soon after she got her promotion.
Bijaya also looked after varied sections, viz Music, Naharolgi Khonjel (Youth section), Wari, English Talk, Women’s program, etc.
Known for her unique voice and multi-talent, her death comes as a huge shock to all the staff of All India Radio and her friends and fan circles.
Many of her close friends and fans have condoled the demise of Bijaya Yumlembam.
“I seem to be losing more than one colleague every single day…Today it has hit me very very hard. Lost a dedicated broadcaster, a mast personality, a good human being and a beloved friend at Airimphal. Prayers for her immediate family and extended AIR Imphal family,” said one Basudha Halder Banerji.
“Deeply mourn the untimely demise of my dearest sister Bijaya Yumlembam, Radio icon of Manipur. May her soul rest in peace,” said one Seram Neken.
