Ahead of Amit Shah visit, dozen dead, scores injured in Manipur violence

Imphal: At least 12 people including two police personnel dead and scores injured in different parts of Manipur on Sunday.

Meanwhile, over 100 houses have been burned down in a tit for tat retaliation between two communities.

Unconfirmed reports said one civilian has been killed and one injured after unknown miscreants suspected to be Kuki opened fire at Pheiyeng village under Imphal West district on Sunday around 1.30 a.m.

The victim has been identified as Angom Basanta, son of Ingojao. He received two bullet injuries. The injured person has been identified as Premjit.

In another incident two police personnel – Wangkheimayum Chanson, 29, from Wangkhei and Kennedy Khumanthem, 23, of Laingoubi were killed when suspected Kuki militants fired upon them  at Sanabi, near Yaingangpokpi, which lies between Imphal East and  Ukhrul districts. Three people including a woman, H Ibemcha, 45, of Sugnu Awang Leikai, and two police personnel, Th Kiran Singh, 47, and Sapam Bishwarup have sustained bullet injuries.

The reports further mentioned that at least six militants also got killed during the shooting incident. Their bodies have been carried away by the militants, it said.

In another incident, at least six people including a police officer were killed in separate incidents at Lanching near Sugnu PS on Sunday morning. The shootout began at around 2.30 am on Sunday when suspected militants burned down over 100 houses belonging to Meiteis at Tungjeng, Napat and Wakokpi villages. 

BJP MLA’s house vandalised

In a related development, two youths sustained bullet injuries after the son of BJP MLA Khumukcham Raghumani, of Uripok Assembly constituency, allegedly fired upon them on Sunday afternoon. Afterwards, an irate mob vandalised the house of BJP. Meanwhile, district magistrates of Imphal West and East have shortened curfew relaxation to 11.30 am.
