Agartala man detained with 1.890 kg gold

Agartala: The CISF personnel on Wednesday seized as many as 16 golden biscuits worth Rs 9.76 Cr at MBB airport here from the possession of a Kolkata-bound passenger identified as Biplab Choudhury (40).

Police sources said Chowdhury, a resident of the Kamarpukurpar area of the city was travelling by Air India flight at 11.30 AM.

During baggage scanning security personnel found 16 golden biscuits weighing altogether 1.890 KG in his luggage. CISF jawans have taken his custody and after three hours of interrogation Choudhury was handed over to Custom, sources said.

However, the police couldn’t confirm the source of the gold and its destination. It is suspected that the gold was smuggled from Bangladesh, sourced in the Middle East and en route to Kolkata jewellery manufacturers via Agartala.

Earlier, on several occasions, gold bars and biscuits were seized at the airport from the possession of Bangladeshi nationals and the people living in the Agartala and Sepahijala districts but no details with police about the prosecution of the offenders.
