Bengaluru: Voice for Rahul Gandhi to take up the mantle of the Congress President is growing in the rank and files of the Karnataka Congress. After Siddaramaiah, KPCC President D.K. Shivakumar Tuesday pitched for the Congress scion to take charge as the AICC chief.
“The entire country and Congress workers want Rahul Gandhi to assume charge. We have been pleading to him to take up the mantle since he quit as AICC president,” he told reporters here.
The Congress Working Committee meeting is scheduled on October 16 in New Delhi where the issue is expected to be taken up for discussion.
Though Rahul Gandhi is not AICC president, he is discharging 90 per cent of the responsibilities at present, and hence it will be appropriate for him to accept the role of AICC chief, Shivakumar said.
On Congress High Command offering the national role to Siddaramaiah, the KPCC president said the issue has not been discussed in the party’s state unit and he would not like to interfere in the matters of Siddaramaiah.
“He (Siddaramaiah) is our legislature party leader. Therefore, I do not want to interfere in his matters. It (a national role for Siddaramaiah) is a lie. Such discussion has not taken place among us,” he said.
According to reports, Siddaramaiah had refused to accept the national role offered to him by interim AICC president Sonia Gandhi during his recent visit to New Delhi.
Speaking to the media on several occasions, Siddaramaiah has also flatly rubbished the reports saying that it was a lie as there was no such offer made by Sonia Gandhi to him.
