Imphal: Health and IPR Minister Dr. S. Ranjan Singh has said that accurate population data is necessary for the formulation of policies. The Minister was speaking as chief guest on the occasion of World Population Day observation held at the Indian Medical Association, IMA, Lamphelpat, Monday.
Ranjan maintained that demography is destiny. The size of the population and its age groups play an important role in deciding our future. Sustainable development will depend on the existing pattern of demography. There is variation in population concentration and its distribution from state to state, community to community, and also country to country, he added.
He said that we need to discuss the population issue in two ways. Overpopulation and population collapse issues are the two aspects. We need a balanced approach to both issues. He said that the variation of fertility rate amongst communities could be the focus. The sustainability of the fertility rate should be maintained, he added.
Minister also informed that the true meaning and theme of the celebration of World Population Day should be understood by all. The state cabinet has also approved the creation of the post of Joint Director, Population. He stated there is a close relationship between demography, population and governance.
Minister Ranjan also flagged off a rally in connection with the World Population Day observation which was attended by the medical officials, staff and nursing students before the formal function started.
