Agartala: With the rest of the country, the electoral roll of over 27.35 lakh voters of Tripura would be linked with the 12-digit Aadhaar number by September to ensure the cleaning of the voter’s list, said Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Kiran Gitte here on Sunday.

He said the Election Commission of India (ECI) has decided to link Aadhaar with Voter ID as part of electoral reform and to bring transparency to the voting process in consultation with the Ministry of Law last month.

The process of Aadhar and Voter ID linking would start on August 1 and continue till Sept 30.

“As per the directions of the Supreme Court and amendment passed by the Parliament, voter identity cards will be linked with Aadhaar. The Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are advised to visit each and every house for collecting the information”, Gitte said.

Tripura has an electorate of 27,35,546 – 13,81,693 males, 13,53,818 females and 35 third-genders. As most of the assembly constituencies have voters between 45,000 and 50,000, it would not be a problem for the BLOs to cover all the houses in two months, he stated.

Nullifying the apprehension of personal information getting leaked in the public domain after linking of Aadhaar and Voters ID, Gitte asserted there is no reason for such fear, as ECI will keep everyone’s information confidential.
