Pherzawl: The District Administration of Pherzawl today observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with a series of awareness programmes under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Saptah, reaffirming its commitment to building a drug-free society.
A district-level programme was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall on the theme, “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan – Vikshit Bharat Ki Pehchaan.” ADC Zosanglur Joute led the event and administered the anti-drug pledge, which was simultaneously taken by government institutions in the district.
Participants also joined the national observance through a live webcast organised by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
As part of the week-long campaign, awareness programmes were conducted in villages and among youth organisations. A programme held at Pherzawl Community Hall on June 23 witnessed enthusiastic participation from district officials, including Superintendent of Police T. Lalboi Haokip, civil society organisations and village authorities, who pledged to work collectively towards eliminating drug abuse.
The campaign gained further momentum on June 24 when Deputy Commissioner Anunay Anand, IAS, flagged off the “Run for a Drug-Free Senvon – Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life” marathon at Senvon Public Ground. Organised in collaboration with the Senvon Youth Club, the event attracted hundreds of young participants.
Addressing the participants, the Deputy Commissioner lauded the proactive role of youth in combating drug abuse, describing the marathon as a symbol of the community’s determination to promote a healthy and addiction-free lifestyle. ADC Zosanglur Joute, attending as Guest of Honour, urged participants to become ambassadors of the anti-drug movement in their respective communities.
Supported by village authorities, local leaders, and volunteers, the marathon featured anti-drug slogans and placards, reflecting strong community solidarity.
The campaign concluded with a strong message of collective responsibility, highlighting Pherzawl’s continued efforts to combat substance abuse through public awareness, youth participation and community engagement. Notably, Pherzawl remains the only hill district in Manipur free from poppy cultivation, according to surveys by the Manipur Remote Sensing Applications Centre (MARSAC).
