Imphal: In a significant stride towards environmental sustainability and community welfare, Assam Rifles conducted a mass tree plantation drive across various locations in Ukhrul District, Manipur. This initiative, carried out at Sorde, Gamnoum, Shakpao and Shangshak, serves as a continuation of the ecological efforts initiated on World Earth Day earlier this week. Celebrated annually on 22 April, World Earth Day 2026 focuses on the theme “Planet vs. Plastics” and advocates for a shift towards natural solutions alongside a reduction in environmental pollutants to protect the global ecosystem.
The event witnessed active collaboration between the 55 participating personnel and the local community, reflecting a shared vision for a greener future. A total of 80 residents, comprising 60 adults and 20 children, joined the drive to plant 250 saplings. Beyond the physical act of planting, the initiative aimed to heighten awareness regarding biodiversity preservation, soil erosion prevention and the ongoing battle against climate change. Local participants were encouraged to take ownership of the saplings to ensure their long-term survival and healthy growth. By fostering this spirit of collective responsibility, the programme not only contributed to the region’s green cover but also further strengthened the harmonious bond between Assam Rifles and the people of Ukhrul.
