Imphal: Kh. Keipha, widely known as Diya Khwairakpam, a pioneering Manipuri actor and filmmaker in the 1990s, passed away at 57 following a stroke early Wednesday morning.
Diya breathed his last at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) at 3:51 a.m., shortly after being admitted. He had been suffering from a heart condition for some time, family members said.
Expressing his condolences, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh mourned the loss of the veteran actor, calling him “a true icon of Manipuri cinema and theatre.” He further stated, “His immense contribution to art and culture has left an indelible mark on our society. His demise is an irreparable loss to the artistic fraternity and the people of Manipur.”
Born to Kh. Momon Singh and Bormani Devi in Yumnam Leikai, Lairembi Maning, Imphal West, Diya began his artistic journey at the age of 10 as a child actor with Panthoibi Naitya Mandir. Remarkably, nearly all of the 18 celluloid films in which he played the lead role became household names.
His debut film, Kombirei (1989), was one of Manipur’s most celebrated films. Some of his other notable works include Engalei, Madhabee, Sana Manbi Sanarei, Amambasu Anganbani, Amuba Chandon, and Meichak Meichak.
Diya received the prestigious Best Actor Award for his role in Eigi Punshi.
He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son.
Film Forum Manipur held a condolence meeting at its office in Lamphel Sana Keithel to honour his legacy.
