Agartala: A police constable of Tripura was arrested for appearing before the court in an inebriated condition in Bishalgarh of Sepahijala district during his deposition as a witness in a murder case.
Police said the accused constable, identified as Ruphanghu Dangu, posted at the SP office in Sepahijala, was summoned by the district and session court to record his statement as a witness to the murder of one civilian in the Ganiamara area under the Bishalgarh police station in 2017.
However, when the accused constable attended the witness box of the court, judge Debasish Kar found him intoxicated and didn’t follow the court decorum despite repeated warnings. Finally, the court ordered police to take his custody and arrested him after formal proceedings.
Later, the accused constable was taken to a local hospital for a medical test and arrested afterward, following the complaint lodged by the district court. However, the accused constable denied the allegation and claimed that he was not drunk but was chewing tobacco.
The Superintendent of Police (Sepahijala), B. P Reddy said an investigation was started against the accused based on the complaint and that he will initiate a departmental inquiry against the accused constable.
