Shillong: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has sought an action taken report from Meghalaya Chief Secretary Donald Philips Wahlang after a mother lost her newborn in a tourist taxi due to a traffic jam caused by a fishing competition at Pamphyrnai lake near the Shillong-Nongtoin National Highway.
Voicing serious concern over the incident, NCW Chairperson, Rekha Sharma has asked Wahlang to submit a detail report within seven days to the commission.
“It is utmost crucial to conduct a program to sensitize people of Meghalaya to deal with such cases with empathy,” Sharma said, urging the State government to extend all necessary support to the mother of the deceased baby.
On September 16, Daphiralin Jyrwa of Mawthawniaw village in West Khasi Hills district was forced to deliver a male baby inside a tourist taxi as the vehicle she was travelling got stranded for hours due to massive traffic jam due to haphazard parking of vehicles on both sides of the National Highway and thousands of people both anglers and spectators attending the fishing competition occupied the highway.
