Lagos: Five people, including three members of Nigeria’s paramilitary agency, were killed by unknown gunmen in the country’s southern state of Imo on Monday, local police said.
The Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps personnel were riding in a vehicle when the gunmen ambushed and killed them as well as two civilians in the Obiangwu community, said Henry Okoye, Imo’s police spokesperson.
Security in the area has been beefed up, said the spokesperson, noting that police operatives are on the trail of the hoodlums.
Eyewitnesses told Xinhua that soldiers have taken over the community.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
In recent months, there have been a series of gunmen attacks on police stations and prisons in the southern part of Nigeria.
