Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: At least 135 distressed farmers from across the eight districts of Marathwada region committed suicide from January 1, 2023 to February 28 through various means due to mounting debt, natural calamity, land infertility and other reasons.
The updated report released by the Divisional Commissioner Official sources here today said that the highest number of 47 suicides were reported in Beed district followed by 25 suicides in Dharashiv district, 17 suicides in Nanded district,13 suicides in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, 12 suicides in Parbhani district, 11 suicides in Jalna district, nine suicides in Latur district and two suicides in Hingoli district, they stated.
The report further stated that out of the 135 suicide cases, 52 cases have been found liable for compensation.
As per the rule, compensation has been given to next of kins of five deceased by the respective district administrations.
Meanwhile, claims in six cases were rejected following official inquiries made by the respective district administrations, and the remaining 78 cases are still pending for inquiries, the report added.
It may noted that 1022 such farmers had committed suicides in the region in 2022.
Meanwhile, since last two days unseasonal rains with hailstorm have lashed different places in the region resulting in damaged harvesting crop of Rabbi in many area and farmers once again found in panic situation.
