Shillong: The Meghalaya government has decided to allow students contracting COVID-19 during or before their board exams to sit for their exam at a later date.
State Education Minister, Lakhmen Rymbui Friday held a meeting with his department official on the infection of the students with the virulent COVID-19.
“Students who are infected with COVID-19 would be allowed to sit for their board examination after they recover provided they have an RT-PCR report confirming COVID-19,” Rymbui said after the meeting.
The Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination would begin on April 19 and end on May 3. The Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC.) would begin on April 16 and end on May 12.
This year 65787 candidates would be appearing for their SSLC examination. Another 32499 students would be appearing for the HSSLC.
Stating the COVID-19 situation as the new normal, Rymbui said: “Exams would go on and if any candidate.”
“Students need not panic and all protocols would be followed while conducting the examination,” the Education Minister said, adding that “one or two examination halls” would be kept extra in all the examination centers so that if anyone falls sick they would be able to write their examination there.
Meanwhile, authorities of St. Mary’s School, Shillong and Shillong College have temporarily shut down their institutions after students tested positive for COVID-19.
A class VI student of a premier school in Shillong, St Mary’s Higher Secondary School has tested positive for COVID-19, prompting the school authorities to suspend offline classes until further notification.
The premier North Eastern Hills University has also issued a notification that online classes would be conducted and the campus would remain closed.
