New Delhi: The Congress on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led government at the Centre over reports that it did not cooperate with the independent Committee probing the allegations of ‘snooping’ through Pegasus spyware.

“How can they give the answers properly? Because if they give the answers properly, they have to answer that under which provision or under which act they had installed or they had used Pegasus weapon against Rahul Gandhi, leaders of opposition parties, senior journalists, Election Commissioner, important scientists of our country, civil society activists. This government has used this Pegasus weapon against the registrar of the Supreme Court also, so how can they answer? Everybody knows that this weapon was used,” Congress spokesperson Gourav Vallabh said in response to a question about the Pegasus probe committee report that the Centre did not cooperate in the matter.

He further said, “Everybody knows that this weapon (Pegasus) was used. This weapon had given a dent to the democracy as it is against the law and the constitution of our country.”

Meanwhile, former Congress president and MP Rahul Gandhi in a tweet wrote, “PM and his govt’s non-cooperation with the SC appointed committee is an acceptance that they had something deeper to hide and want to crush democracy.”

The Supreme Court on Thursday took on record the sealed cover report submitted by the independent commission probing the allegations of Pegasus snooping software being used.

A Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice NV Ramana said today that 29 phones were examined and malware was found in five, but there’s no conclusive proof of Pegasus spyware in them.

The bench, which also had Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hima Kohli, orally remarked that the Government of India did not cooperate with the Committee.
