Hyderabad: With rains lashing various regions of the state leading to increasing water levels of reservoirs, the Telangana state Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K.T Rama Rao (known as KTR) on Wednesday directed the concerned officials to take up relief and precautionary measures if rains continue to occur during the next few days even as FHMC officials evacuated 1500 people residing near Musi downstream areas.
In a Video conference with the senior officials of GHMC and HMWSSB at his residence Pragathi Bhavan here, KTR, who suffered an injury to his left leg on Saturday last and is currently taking rest as per the advice of doctors, asked the officials to ensure there was no loss of human life.
With incessant rains lashing across the State, there were possibilities of old and dilapidated buildings collapsing, the Minister said and instructed the officials to expedite the demolition of such structures to avoid any untoward incidents.
He also instructed the officials especially to focus on low-lying areas which were prone to more impact due to rains.
He instructed the officials of HMWSSB and Hyderabad’s neighboring Urban bodies to execute works for controlling the flood impact or prevention of water logging within respective limits.
The GHMC and HMWSSB command control centers should be used effectively, he said.
The capacity of water bodies, inflows, and outflows should be closely monitored in coordination with the irrigation department, the Minister also instructed the officials.
On Twitter during the day, GHMC Mayor G. Vijaya Laxmi said that the GHMC officials in coordination with the revenue department, have evacuated 1500 residents residing near the Musi downstream flowing area and shifted them to shelter homes due to the increased flow of flood water.
All necessary arrangements have been made at the shelter homes for the citizens, the Mayor added.
The continuing rains earlier and resultant inflows into water reservoirs in and around the State capital, only eight gates of the Himayat Sagar were lifted up to 4 feet at 1100 hours Wednesday and excess water is being drained out through these gates.
The present level of the Himayat Sagar water level was 1762.05 ft against the full tank level (FTL) of 1763.50 ft, according to HMWS&SB officials here.
The officials also lifted 13 gates with 6 feet of Osamansagar and the present water level of the Sagar was 1789.10 ft against the FTL level of 1790 ft.
The Hussain Sagar slightly crossed the FTL at 0830 hours on Wednesday and the GHMC officials are evacuating the people living in low-lying areas in Gandhi Nagar, Ashok Nagar, Moosarambabh, and other places in the city.
The water level in Hussain Sagar was recorded at 513.44 m against the FTL of 513.41 m. The maximum water level of the lake is 514.75 m.
In view of overflowing musi water, the Moosarambagh bridge is closed for motorists, and traffic is not allowed between Amberpet/ Kachiguda and Moosarambagh/Malakpet via the bridge.
The traffic police have requested commuters to take alternative routes until the water levels recede in the Musi River.
A man who was stuck in the surging water at Puranapul in the city early on Wednesday was rescued by the police.
After carrying him to a safer area, we shifted him to the Osmania General Hospital, according to mangalhat Sub Inspector Ram Babu.
A video of the Sub-inspector carrying the man on his shoulders and wading through the water has gone viral on social media. Senior officials appreciated his act and announced a reward for his brave act.
