Lucknow: Congress leader and film actor Raj Babbar was on Thursday sentenced to two years imprisonment in a 26-year-old assault case by an MP-MLA court.

He was also imposed a fine of Rs 8,500.

The court held Raj Babbar guilty of assaulting a polling officer and creating obstruction in the government work. Though the court granted interim bail to the Congress leader, he can now move the High Court.

Raj Babbar was present in the court when the quantum of punishment was pronounced by the judge.

It may be noted that Raj Babbar contested the Lok Sabha election from Lucknow against former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1996. It was alleged that during polling he misbehaved and assaulted a polling officer.

The then polling officer Krishna Singh Rana lodged an FIR at Wazirganj police station on May 2, 1996 and alleged that SP candidate Raj Babbar along with his supporters barged inside the polling centre and indulged in scuffle affecting the poll process.
