Kolkata: A Trinamool Congress-run Panchayat Samiti leader, identified as Swapan Majhi, and his two associates were hacked to death in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district on Thursday, official sources said.
Police investigating the brazen killing of three people at Pearer Park under Canning police station around 9 am by some undefined assailants, said the trio was hacked to death while they were moving on a motorcycle.
The attackers followed them and fired upon Majhi, who was a Canning-Gopalpur panchayat samity member, when he fell from the two-wheeler, the assailants hacked him to death.
His two companions identified as Jhantu and Bhuthnath were also hacked to death by sharp weapons.
The assailants, 4/5 in numbers, fled the area on motorbikes and hurled crude bombs to scare away the chasers.
The trio was proceeding to the local TMC office to attend a meeting for the preparation of the July 21 meeting at Esplanade.
There had been no arrest so far in the triple murder.
A large police contingent reached the site of the crime.
