Assam govt orders probe into killing of civilians in eviction drive

A disturbing video purportedly from the incident site has gone viral which shows police firing on civilians after locals protested against an eviction of 800 families of minority community.

Guwahati: Assam government has ordered a judicial level probe into the death of two civilians and injury of several policeman in an eviction drive in Dholpur area in Darang district in lower Assam.

” The government has decided to investigate the circumstances leading to death of two civilians and several policeman in the Dholpur area in Siphajhar revenue circle. A retired judge of Gauhati High Court will head the investigation,” a statement from the state political and home department said.

An eviction drive, carried out by the Assam government to free land from the “illegal encroachers” in Assam’s Sipajhar area in Darrang district, turned bloody with two civilians losing their lives in the police firing and as many as seven policemen grievously injured as locals protested against the drive.
