Agartala: Altogether seven cadres of banned militant outfit National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) have surrendered before the security forces on Friday in different locations, police said here on Saturday.
At least five NLFT cadres surrendered before Assam Rifles at Anandabazar camp in North Tripura while two others of the same faction laid down their arms before the Special Branch of Tripura police in North Tripura.
Police said five surrendered militants were identified as Rambadal Tripura (40), Jalaksa Tripura (38), Jaba Ranjan Tripura (38) and Khajendra Reang (36) belong to Surjyahampara hamlet of Anandabazar and Swapan Tripura (16) of Ramani Kumar Para of Manu in Dhalai district who had been recruited by NLFT self-style commander Parimal Debbarma in 2020.
Getting frustrated with jungle life, sufferings and social isolation for two years, they decided to leave the outfit and fled away from the Bangladesh camp three days ago.
After entering India, they contacted Assam Rifles to join the mainstream and following all formalities, Assam Rifles authority had arranged their surrender and police have been interrogating them, sources said. On the other hand, two more cadres of NLFT – Hakim Rai Reang (36) and Ejamani Reang (35) of Anandabazar had surrendered a few hours ahead of the five others.
They claimed they had joined the outfit last year for earning but gradually they became frustrated and this prompted them to return to normal life, police added.
