Agartala: Tripura government has successfully shifted over 46 percent of displaced Bru families of Mizoram in eight locations of the state in the last one year ahead of the deadline of the union home ministry to complete the rehabilitation of a total of 37,136 persons of 6,959 Bru families.
The Principal Secretary, Revenue Puneet Agarwal said that the Central government has fixed the timeline for shifting all Bru families from makeshift camps of North Tripura to the selected 12 locations of the state who had fled to North Tripura following communal clashes in October 1997.
However, a total of 3,232 Bru families have been resettled in eight locations so far and the government is trying hard to comply with the deadline. He said Bru leaders have submitted a list of 4473 families so far to the administration but have yet to receive the list for the remaining 2486 families.
The government is ready to shift the Brus to the selected locations at Bongaphapara (Longtarai Valley), Kaskau and Haduklaupara (Ambassa), Ultacherra (Gandacherra) of Dhalai, Wainbukcherra-Ranipara, Hamsapara and Khakchang (Panisagar), Bhandarima-Pushporampara and Gachirampara (Kanchanpur) in North Tripura, West Kalajhari (Amarpur) and Shilacherra (Karbook) in Gomati and Kala Lawgang (Santirbazar) of South Tripura once get the full details, Agarwal said.
He said the administration has carried out area development activities in all those locations which included jungle clearance, land leveling, brick soling of connecting roads, construction of internal link road, installation of drinking water facilities, power, Solar Street Lights, construction of common shelter houses with a common kitchen, construction of Common toilet blocks, construction of dwelling units with toilet for each family, setting up schools, Anganawari and health centers.
As per the agreement, every Bru family living in the camps would get a 40×30 ft plot of land for building a pucca house besides, a fixed deposit of Rs 4 lakh, monthly financial aid of Rs 5,000 with free rations supply for the next two years. The central government is providing an amount of Rs 1.5 lakh to every family for housing.
The Centre had sanctioned a package of Rs 600 Cr for Bru settlement in Tripura. An amount of Rs 150 lakh was earmarked to the state government for land acquisition and the rest would be spent for the welfare of the Brus and the development of infrastructure in the localities.
