Agartala: A psychologically challenged lady was beaten up severely at Rajarbag area in Udaipur of Gomati district by locals accusing her of being involved in a child lifting gang, which has appeared to be the third incident of attack in the state in the last two days on the allegation.

The police said there is no instance of child lifting in Tripura as far; however, the rumor of child theft has become an issue of law and order in the state. Rumour-mongering of child lifters, cow lifters, burglar gangs and human organ lifters followed by lynching have become a fresh menace of the state in the last few years.

As many as 10 people died in different parts of Tripura in mob lynching since 2018 and the last killing was reported from Jirania in the eastern part of Agartala on Friday where an unknown person was hacked to death. At least three persons of a family have been arrested in connection with the case.

According to the report, two incidents of rumored child thefts on Saturday and Sunday surfaced in which three persons were heckled and the mentally deranged woman was severely beaten up.

Later, police rescued the woman and shifted her to the hospital but nobody has been arrested yet.

In a separate incident locals detained three persons at Santirbazar railway station of South Tripura suspecting them involved in child lifting. Later, Police reached the spot and upon interrogation, it was revealed that one of the three – a resident of North Tripura – worked at Baikhora as a mason.

He along with two of his friends – both dwellers of Assam – came to collect pending money from one of his clients on Saturday. After verifying their statement, police escorted them to an Agartala-bound train.

Two days ago police arrested three persons in connection with the mob lynching of a suspected thief on Friday wee hours in Jirania. An unknown person was accused of being involved in the dacoit gang, which has been operating in and around Agartala for a month, and allegedly, entered a house late at night.

Meanwhile, as many as seven cases of unnatural deaths including a TSR jawan were reported from different parts of the state in the last 24 hours.
