2nd North East India Film Festival kicks off

Imphal: The 2nd North East India Film Festival (NEIFF) 2025 Manipur was inaugurated Wednesday at the City Convention Centre. The festival is organised by THOUNA, Manipur, in association with Film Forum Manipur and the Directorate of Information & Public Relations, Government of Manipur, and sponsored by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, and the National Film Development Corporation. 

Speaking on the occasion Chairman Loktak Development Authority (LDA), Government of Manipur M. Asnikumar Singh stated that films have always been a mirror, reflecting the actual image of our society. This industry can generate many employment opportunities and promote our cultural heritage. Cinema plays a major role in providing a positive impact on our society.

He further expressed that the Manipuri film industry is deeply rooted in our heritage and ethos, as it not only entertains but also highlights the challenges. The rich culture and folklores could be the voice of one’s own culture. Manipur, with its rich and storied cinematic tradition, has long been a torchbearer of cultural expression in the Northeast and beyond. He further stated that he will be extending all possible support for Manipuri cinema in the future.

One of the presidium members, Prof. N. Lokendro, Vice Chancellor Manipur University stated that Manipur films will foster cultural unity and nurture the growth of film industry within the region. It should also serve as a platform to showcase outstanding artistic and technical achievements from the talented filmmakers of Northeast India.   Film makers from Northeastern states have bagged international film awards on many occasions.. This opportunity for exposure to good cinema in the next five days especially from the Northeast is a noble initiative. 

Prof. L. Hemchandra Singh, Director, DM Community college, DM University, Manipur also attended the opening function as one of the presidium members along with renowned film producers, directors and other well-known personalities.

The festival will conclude on February 16.
