Kohima: The District Administration, led by Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) of Tening Tumben P. Tsanglao and the Forest Range Officer of Tening Namsibo thanked four minor boys for the rescue of two leopard cubs from Tening village under Peren district of Nagaland and their subsequent transfer to Nagaland Zoological Park in Dimapur.
According to official sources Tuesday, the two leopard cubs were found on Friday (August 20 last) by a group of four boys, all of them aged around 11 to 12 years at Tening village. They found the abandoned cubs in a hollowed tree near the stream adjacent to paddy fields of Tening village, when they went downstream for a bath. They carefully picked the cubs and brought to the village, after which concerned residents of Tening village informed the EAC for necessary assistance in handing over the cubs to concerned authorities.
Sources said that the EAC Tening reported the matter to the officials of Nagaland Zoological Park at Dimapur and the Divisional Forest Officer of Peren, who initiated necessary protocols for immediate transfer of the cubs from Tening village to Nagaland Zoological Park of Dimapur for specialised care and protection of the cubs. Sources said that the whereabouts of the mother of the cubs is still unknown.
It may be noted that the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists Indian Leopard as “Vulnerable.”
