Bishnupur: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Manipur Regional Office, in association with the Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicrafts Artisans Cooperative Society Ltd. (AWAS), observed the 12th National Handloom Day today at Ningthoukhong Kha-Khunou Community Hall, Bishnupur district, under the theme “Celebrating India’s Weaving Heritage.”
The programme was attended by W. Ibohal Singh, RCS, Government of Manipur; Abhay Kumar, Chairman, Manipur Rural Bank; Beauty Milli, Assistant Director (Design), Weavers Service Centre; Bendang Aier, DGM, NABARD; K. Ramalingam, GM/OIC, NABARD; and Y. Premchandra Meitei, Chairman, AWAS, who were the presidium members.
The programme highlighted the rich tradition of handloom weaving and the significant contribution of weavers to the socio-economic development of rural communities. Stalls showcasing the exquisite handloom products and craftsmanship of local weavers were also set up as part of the observance.
The dignitaries interacted with the weavers and discussed various aspects of the handloom sector, including livelihood opportunities, challenges faced by artisans, market access and the need for greater promotion of indigenous products.
As part of the programme, outstanding artisans and women weavers were felicitated in recognition of their contribution to preserving and promoting the State’s rich handloom heritage.
Speaking on the significance of the occasion, the dignitaries emphasized the need to strengthen the handloom sector by creating better livelihood opportunities for weavers, improving market linkages, promoting indigenous products and generating greater public awareness about the socio-economic importance of handloom weaving.
It may be mentioned that National Handloom Day is observed every year on August 7 across India to honour the handloom weaving community, celebrate the country’s rich textile heritage and support the livelihoods of local artisans. The day commemorates the Swadeshi Movement, which was launched on August 7, 1905, and symbolises the promotion of indigenous goods and self-reliance.
