100% COVID-19 cases in Meghalaya of Delta variant

Shillong: The Delta strain of the COVID-19 has been detected in all the positive cases of late, the authorities pointed out as Meghalaya registered one of its highest daily case counts on Tuesday with 710 cases of infection adding up to 5,332 active cases and nine deaths increasing the fatality figure to 1,040, even as 453 cases of recovery surged the number of recovered cases to 56,101 in the state, which has so far registered 62,473 confirmed cases so far.

“As per information from the Health and Family Welfare Department, the Delta strain constitutes 100 per cent of the cases in the state. It is a variant of concern and highly infectious, and the number of cases as well as hospitalization cases may start increasing rapidly,” East Khasi Hills district Deputy Commissioner,Isawanda Laloo said.

The Deputy Commissioner urged the public to follow COVID-appropriate behaviour meticulously at all times, avoid unnecessary travel and exposure as far as possible, and to vaccinate at the earliest if not already done so.

Of the new COVID-19 cases detected on Tuesday, the senior medical official said, 330 were in East Khasi Hills district, 109 in West Garo Hills district, 66 in Ri-Bhoi district , 58 in West Jaintia Hills district , 45 in East Jaintia Hills district, 42 in West Khasi Hills district, 17 in South West Khasi Hills district, 16 in East Garo Hills district, 11 in South Garo Hills district and five in South West Garo Hills district.

“While vaccinated persons can still get infected, the data strongly indicates that vaccination greatly reduces the likelihood of getting infected with the virus. Fully vaccinated persons have a much lower chance of getting infected,” the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner iterated.

With 1,932 active COVID-19 cases, the East Khasi Hills, which includes State capital Shillong is the most affected district followed by West Garo Hills district with 937 active cases, Ri-Bhoi district with 654 active cases, West Jaintia Hills district with 585 active cases, West Khasi Hills district with 366 active cases and South West Khasi Hills district with 324 active cases, while the five other districts have less than 200 active cases each, as per the latest case count.
