Youth injured while attempting to flee from police custody

Hardoi (UP): A youth arrested on charges of molesting a girl was injured in an encounter with police while attempting to flee from the police custody in Pihani area of Hardoi district in Uttar Pradesh, police sources said on Wednesday.
Police sources said that a youth named Afzal molested a 15-year-old girl during Ganesh Visarjan Yatra on Monday.
“Afzal was nabbed by the people and was thrashed before handing over to the police,” they said.
Police sources said that perturbed with the incident the girl attempted to commit suicide on Tuesday.
”The girl was taken to the medical college from where she was referred to Lucknow in a serious condition,” they said.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Keshav Chandra Gowasmi said that the incident took place while Afzal was being taken to the court of Sub Divisional Magistrate Shahabad late on Tuesday evening.
“On the way to the SDM court Azfal snatched the service revolver of a head constable and attempted to escape from the police custody,” he said.
He said that when challenged by the police Afzal opened fire on the police party and sustained bullet injury in her leg in retaliatory firing.
“The accused was taken to the community health center from where he was referred to the medical college,” he said.
