Senapati: “We are one people, the Nagas.” With these powerful words, Temjen Imna Along, Minister for Tourism & Higher Education, Government of Nagaland, stirred hearts and reaffirmed a shared identity at the 8th General Conference of the Poumai Naga Naotumai Me (PNNM), the Poumai Naga Women Union, currently underway at the Senapati District Headquarters from February 26–28, 2026.
Held under the inspiring theme “Ignite Your Sparkle,” the three-day gathering has brought together women leaders, dignitaries, community organisations and delegates from Poumai-inhabited regions in a vibrant celebration of heritage, resilience and collective responsibility.
A celebration of culture and identity
The conference’s cultural day unfolded in a riot of colours, with traditional performances, folk songs and presentations showcasing the rich legacy of the Poumai Naga community. The arrival of the Chief Guest and his entourage was marked by a rousing traditional welcome, reflecting the deep respect and unity of the hosts.
The event is being graced by Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, MLA of 9-Kohima Town A/C, as Guest of Honour, and Mamoni Doley, Deputy Commissioner of Senapati, as Special Guest. Also present were Shaikh Mohd Zaib, Superintendent of Police, Senapati, along with leaders and representatives from various Poumai and Naga organisations, civil authorities and officials from the Tourism Department.
A call beyond boundaries
In his address, Along conveyed warm greetings from Nagaland and lauded the performances as a living testament to the community’s enduring cultural spirit. Congratulating the women gathered, he described them as “the epitome not only of beauty, but of strength, resilience and above all, commitment,” acknowledging their silent sacrifices as the bedrock of strong families and societies.

Describing the conference as “a restoration and a recommitment,” he spoke candidly about once holding misconceptions regarding Nagas living across state boundaries. Those perceptions, he admitted, changed after personally visiting Naga-inhabited areas beyond Nagaland.
“I was wrong. We are one people,” he affirmed, urging the gathering to rise above fragmented thinking and geographical divisions that threaten unity.
He further acknowledged the contributions of Dr. Ato, describing him as a transformative figure in both politics and healthcare service. Referring to initiatives undertaken under the leadership of Neiphiu Rio, he highlighted the conduct of hundreds of free medical and surgical camps across remote villages in Nagaland, bringing vital healthcare access to countless people, especially women.
Along cautioned that a community which fails to preserve its heritage risks losing its direction for future progress. He encouraged the women to remain steadfast in protecting culture, strengthening unity and nurturing leadership for generations to come.
Leadership rooted in reflection and resolve
Earlier, in her presidential address, P. Delilah Pao expressed profound gratitude for the presence of dignitaries and delegates, describing the gathering not merely as a response to an invitation, but “a calling — to serve, to stand firm, and to protect what we believe is right for our community.”
Reflecting on her tenure, she characterised it as “a roller-coaster, filled with unexpected challenges, misunderstandings and trials that tested our endurance.” She spoke candidly of moments marked by emotional and organisational strain — “nights of silence, of prayer, of self-doubt” — while extending heartfelt appreciation to leaders, unit members and well-wishers who stood by her during trying times.
In a gesture of reconciliation, she reached out to those who differed with her leadership, urging that experiences become lessons rather than divisions. Calling for deeper solidarity, she emphasised that no woman should have to walk a path of hardship alone. Her vision, she said, is not merely to build an organisation, but to nurture a family grounded in truth, respect and unity.
As the conference continues, the message resonates far beyond Senapati — a reminder that identity is strength, unity is power, and when women ignite their sparkle, communities shine brighter together.
