Agartala: Veteran Congress MLA from Unakoti district Birajit Sinha on Thursday wrote to Tripura’s Director General of Police (DGP) and State Home Secretary seeking enhancement of his security following an audio recording that went viral, which allegedly divulged the planning of the murder of Sinha by two persons involved in tender negotiation.

Based on the specific allegation raised by the MLA, police immediately launched an investigation and recorded the statement of Sinha besides stepping up his security.

Meanwhile, Sinha’s followers of his constituency in Kailashahar announced to stage a demonstration on Friday seeking immediate arrest of the accused persons and bring them under the criminal justice system.

Sinha alleged that the mastermind of the planning has been identified as Abdul Mannan, a resident of Sonamura of Sepahijala district who has doing mafia activities taking support from his close relative Mabaswar Ali who had been a CPI-M MLA till a day before the announcement of the last assembly election schedule and switched to BJP and contested as a saffron candidate against Sinha.

“Three minutes long audio tape revealed that Abdul Mannan was involved in the murderous attack on Sinha in 2003 assembly election during CPI(M)’s rule, which killed one of my personal security guards. Two of his associates were heard talking on the phone, referring to Mannan’s direction that they prefer to attack me outside my locality because I raised a complaint to Chief Minister regarding his illegal intervention in tender distribution under Drinking Water and Sanitation department in Unokoti,” Sinha told the media.

Mannan was a dedicated CPI-M cadre till BJP came to power in 2018 but soon after the change of guard, he switched to BJP and now he is one of the leading faces of the saffron party who look after the tender distribution process among the government contractors for Public Works and Drinking Water & Sanitation Department, Sinha alleged, adding, when CM has been found saying to erase mafias, illegal negotiation, and corruption, his party man was openly doing these challenging the Chief Minister.

“I urged the Chief Minister to prove his “mafia-free” slogan is not mere lip service. If a section of his party leaders tries to monopolize the tendering process by blocking entries of others, the mafia could never be neutralized and they will target whoever raises their voice against them,” Sinha added.
