Saharanpur: A woman and her mother were set on fire by her husband allegedly over family discord in the Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh early Saturday, police said.
Superintendent of Police (City) Abhimanyu Manglik said the woman Ritika (18) sustained serious burn injuries, while her mother Payal (45) was charred to death. “The accused identified as Nitin (25) has been arrested,” he said about the Krishna Dham colony incident under Janakpuri police station.
Police sources said that Ritika married Nitin, a resident of Shamli, as per her wishes. “Over the past few months, Ritika had started living with her mother. According to the neighbors Nitin wanted to take Ritika with him, but his mother-in-law Payal was opposed to it,” they said.
Payal’s elder brother Pritam Kumar has lodged a complaint that Nitin poured petrol on his sister and niece and set them on fire. “He has stated that Ritika sustained serious injuries, they said.
Ritika, who sustained 80 percent burn injuries, was rushed to the district hospital from where she has been referred to a higher center for treatment.
