Two sent to jail for poaching migratory birds in Bhitarkanika National Park

The forest personnel have seized 14 dead migratory birds, 4 of them Ruddy Shelduck and 10 lesser whistling ducks, from the possession of the two poachers.

Kendrapara: The Bhitarkanika National park personnel have arrested two poachers, including a 38-years old widow for poaching migratory birds.

The forest personnel have seized 14 dead migratory birds, 4 of them Ruddy Shelduck and 10 lesser whistling ducks, from the possession of the two poachers.

The two poachers were booked under Section 9 and 27 of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and produced before the JMFC court of Rajnagar on Sunday which remanded them into jail custody.

Ranger of Kanika forest Range Manas Kumar Das on Monday said the poachers had trapped the migratory birds at Mahala village within Bhitarkanika National Park by spreading bird feeds laced with drugs.

He said acting on a tip off from reliable sources that the poachers have allegedly trespassed into the Bhitarkanika sanctuary for poaching migratory birds, the forest personnel conducted raids and managed to arrest the poachers on Sunday.

The two arrested poachers confessed to their crime, Das said.
