Two more killed in Manipur’s fresh firing

The troops of the Assam Rifles successfully intercepted a total of four trucks that were involved in the illegal transportation of Areca nuts, lacking the necessary valid documentation.

Imphal: At least two individuals were killed and five others sustained serious injuries in a firing incident between armed miscreants at the bordering area of Kangpokpi and Imphal West district as per a press note from the Control Room, Manipur Police.

The exchange of fire broke out at Koutruk village in Imphal West district and the number of deaths is likely to go up. At least one person is also said to be missing, police sources said.

Manoharmayum Barish Sharma, a former president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha – the youth wing of the BJP – sustained injuries in the firing and has been rushed to a hospital. 

Further, search operations and area domination were conducted by security forces in the fringe and vulnerable areas of hill and valley districts. 

During the operation the following items were recovered from Churachandpur district: One 9mm pistol with mag, one .303 rifle with mag, one improvised 5.56 mm rifle with mag, one 12 bore gun, one improvise mortar Pumpi, Anti riots ammunitions two tear smoke shell, one tear gas grenade, two cart. 38mm, two 9mm CMG mag and one pair of jungle boot.

Meanwhile, Manipur police on Tuesday registered a case over an arson incident  that reportedly took place in Moreh in the middle of this month. “An enquiry is in the process to check the veracity of the allegation as published in “The Print” on January 21,” a statement of the Manipur police department said. 

However, it clarified that there is no evidence to suggest that the arson was carried out by any of the security forces deployed there till now. 

There were armed miscreants present in the areas including where arson took place and security forces engaged with them. The unfortunate incident of fire on 17 January was doused with the help of the fire services department, security forces and locals of the area, it contended.

The troops of the Assam Rifles successfully intercepted a total of four trucks that were involved in the illegal transportation of Areca nuts, lacking the necessary valid documentation. 

Upon thorough inspection, the search operation resulted in a significant seizure, encompassing 328 bags of Areca/ Betel Nuts, weighing approximately 32.8 tons and valued at Rs. 3.936 Crore. These confiscated goods were handed over to the Forest Beat Officer of Kamjong District. 

This successful operation not only curtailed illegal activities but also underscored the commitment to upholding legal and ethical standards in the region, a statement of the Assam Rifles said.
