Mahoba (UP): Two criminals were arrested in an encounter while they were attempting to flee from police custody after snatching the firearm of the police personnel in the Panwari area of Mahoba district in Uttar Pradesh, a senior police officer said.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Aparna Gupta said that five people were arrested in connection with trouble in Nakra village late on Tuesday evening.

“While the arrested accused were being taken to the district hospital for medical examination, two of them snatched the rifle of the police personnel and attempted to escape,” she said.

She said that the criminals were arrested after a brief encounter in which Darshan Singh and Monu sustained bullet injuries in their legs.

“The injured have been admitted to the district hospital. A Sub-Inspector and two personnel also sustained minor injuries in the encounter,” he said.

The SP said that a high-level inquiry has been ordered into the incident. It may be noted that trouble broke out in Nakra village on Monday when a minor boy was killed after being hit by a roadway bus.

Agitated villagers blocked Rath Road and disrupted traffic. While the police were trying to pacify the protestors, some anti-social elements thrashed SI Ram Avatar. After this, a case was lodged against five named and four dozen unidentified people.
