Imphal: The Thadou Students’ Association (TSA), General Headquarters, expressed its support for the state government’s decision to transfer the investigation of repeated arson and terror attacks on prominent Thadou leader Michael Lamjathang Haokip to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
In a press note issued by its spokesperson on September 20, the TSA alleged that these well-coordinated attacks, which occurred on May 7, 2023, August 25, 2024, and August 31, 2024, were likely carried out by armed Kuki militants operating in the Kangvai to Tuibong area of Churachandpur district.
The press note further stated that the TSA had reached out to the leadership of various Kuki armed groups, including the KNO, KNA, KNF(S), KNF-MC, KNF-Z, and KLA, seeking clarity on their involvement in the attacks, which took place in areas dominated by these factions. Thus far, only the KNF(S) has responded, denying any involvement in the attacks. The TSA noted that the other groups’ lack of response or condemnation heightened suspicions about their involvement, which would constitute a serious violation of the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement between these groups and the government.
TSA emphasized the need to safeguard peace-loving Thadou leaders like Michael Lamjathang Haokip, who advocate for peace and stability in Manipur. The association highlighted concerns raised by Retired Lt. Gen. RP Kalitha regarding the ineffectiveness of state police in the hill districts, particularly Churachandpur, both before and after the crisis began.
The press note called on government security forces, both state and central, to restore law and order in the hill areas, particularly in Churachandpur, ensuring that the Indian Constitution and the rule of law are upheld. “This will reassure the public that the government is committed to public safety, peace, and stability,” the note added.
With the NIA now handling the investigation, the TSA expressed hope that the perpetrators and masterminds behind these attacks would be exposed, and justice would be served for all victims, including Michael Lamjathang, his family, and Peniel villagers. The Thadou community views justice for Michael and his family as justice for the entire Thadou people and eagerly awaits that day, the statement concluded.
