Agartala: A special court in Tripura’s Khowai district on Thursday awarded the imprisonment of a 27-year-old youth till death for commissioning multiple rapes on a physically challenged minor over a period of three months.
The court convicted Sujit Tanti under sections 376 (3), and 506 of the IPC and section 6 of the POCSO Act after a long trial, including examining the statements of 20 witnesses, medical evidence, and police investigation reports.
The additional public prosecutor, Abhijit Bhattacharjee, said Khowai police station received a written complaint against Sujit, who had allegedly raped a blind minor girl on several occasions for three months.
After almost eight months, police submitted the charge sheet against the prime accused of the crime, but it took four years to complete the trial.
The victim’s family could come to know about the incident after she was diagnosed as pregnant.
Later, the victim narrated her ordeal to her parents, and when the family got to know about the incident, he threatened the family with dire consequences and even issued death threats to keep silent on the matter.
Finally, in February 2019, the victim’s family registered a case against Sujit Tanti.
