Agartala: The death of an undertrial prisoner in Central Correctional Home on Tuesday in a mysterious condition triggered a reaction while the victim’s family accused the jail authority of indulging in torture of the victim, which resulted in his custodial death.
Police said the body of an under-trial prisoner identified as Babul Das of Camper Bazar area of AD Nagar in Agartala has been shifted to Bishalgarh hospital from the central jail with several injury marks on his body.
The family claimed Babul had been murdered inside the jail and demanded a judicial inquiry.
Babul had been in jail for 48 days after his wife committed suicide in his house on July 14.
According to hospital records, jail authorities brought him to Bishalgarh Hospital with multiple deep injuries on his head and ears.
However, the visiting doctors declared him dead and shifted the body to the GB Hospital mortuary to conduct an autopsy under the observation of forensic experts.
The jail authority has not yet come out with any statement, but an official claimed that Babul got injuries after he slipped from a stair and added, “He got hurt on the head when he rolled down from a stair, and immediately he was provided first aid and rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead. There is no report of any physical fight among the prisoners inside the jail.”
