Agartala: Police arrested a 30-year-old man identified as Raju Debnath of Radhapur village in Dharmanagar under North Tripura district on Monday night with the charge of killing his 65-year-old mother, Shanti Debnath (70), two days ago inside the house.
The accused confessed the crime to police and claimed that her mother had refused to pay him money, which turned the situation volatile on Friday night.
Enraged by the situation, Raju took an axe and hit her repeatedly, which caused her death. Instead of going to the hospital, Raju confined himself in the house for two days and dug a pit to bury her body but couldn’t do it, the police said, referring to his confession.
Neighbours learned about the incident when they were alarmed by an electric meter reader who had gone to the house on Monday and found the rooms were locked from inside, and there were several blood strains in front of the house that had a sticky smell.
According to the police, the meter reader reported the matter to neighbours and when villagers stormed into the house, Raju opened the door and found the mutilated body in the blood pool. Having witnessed the scene, the angry villagers assaulted him and handed him over to the police. The body was cremated on Tuesday after all formalities, and Raju will be produced before the court seeking his custodial trial.
“Raju appears to be mentally imbalanced, and the family is too poor to manage a square male. Raju was dependent on his mother, who worked as a daily wage earner. She was deserted by her husband about 14 years ago, and the only daughter got married in Assam. Therefore, she lived with the son,” said SP North Tripura B P Chakraborty, adding that an investigation has been launched to look at all other possible angles.
”Raju also admitted to police that he had been attempting to conceal her remains in a pit inside the house, but due to unforeseen circumstances, he was unable to complete the task,” Chakraborty added.
