Agartala: A 45-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday at the remote Lalcherra village of Longtarai Valley in Dhalai district on the charge of raping a minor girl three days ago when the entire village was engaged in the observance of the 115th birth anniversary of Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya.
The SDPO, Sona Charan Jamatia, said that the accused, identified as Amardeep Chakma, was arrested halfway from Lalcherra to Dulcherra, and during interrogation he admitted the crime and will be produced before the court seeking a custodial trial.
According to the report, when the villagers were celebrating the birthday of the last king of Tripura, the 7-year-old victim was crossing the road alone. Her neighbor accused Amardeep of helping her in the late afternoon. Later, he allegedly invited the girl to his house for chocolate and raped her.
The victim was released with Rs 10 and asked to buy chocolate and not inform anyone about the incident. The girl had fallen ill the next day and revealed the ordeal to her mother. The family took her to the hospital and lodged a complaint with the police.
The girl is still undergoing treatment but couldn’t recover from the trauma, the police stated.
