Chennai:The mortal remains of Army Major A.Jayanth,
who was killed in a chopper crash in Arunachal Pradesh on Thrusday,
was cremated with full military honours today.
After the Indian Army formally removed the national flag draped over
his body and handed it over to his family, his father lit the funeral pyre
at his native Jeyamangalam village in the southern Theni district of
Tamil Nadu with a 21 gun salute by the military officials and the bugle
sounding the last post.
Several Army officials and a large number of local villagers and family
members bade a tearful adieu to the Major, who was the first generation
person from the family to join the Aymy.
Earlier, the body of the Major was brought to Madurai past midnight
last night where Madurai District Collector Anish Shekhar, officers of
the Indian Army paid a ceremonial tribute at the airport.
Later, it was taken to Jayamangalam village near Periyakulam in an
ambulance where his parents, relatives, friends and members of the
public and paid their respects.
Tamil Nadu Minister I.Periasamy and Theni district officials also paid
their last respects by placing a wreath on the mortal remains of the
Major at his residence.
