Thoubal: An awareness program on “The Manipur Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Rule 2023” took place on Thursday at the Conference Hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office.

In Thoubal district, both the Maintenance Tribunal and the Appellate Tribunal have been established to oversee the implementation of the “Manipur Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Rule 2023,” enacted under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.

During the program, Deputy Commissioner Ahanthem Subhash Singh, IAS, encouraged senior citizens and parents to assert their rights and avail themselves of the benefits provided by the Act. He stressed that the Act is designed to safeguard the life and property of senior citizens and parents, ensuring their security and dignity.

District Social Welfare Officer K Nongpoknganba Salaicha provided detailed information and procedural insights on the rule and the Act through a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation.

To apply for benefits under “The Manipur Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Rule 2023,” individuals or organizations must submit their applications through the presiding officer of the Maintenance Tribunal, who is the SDO of the applicant’s respective area. The District Social Welfare Officer acts as the Maintenance Officer.

The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, imposes a legal obligation on children and heirs to provide maintenance to senior citizens and parents through a monthly allowance. It offers a streamlined, expeditious, and cost-effective mechanism to protect the life and property of older individuals.

Under the Act, “maintenance” encompasses provisions for food, clothing, residence, medical attendance, and treatment, while “welfare” includes essential provisions such as food, healthcare, recreation centers, and other amenities necessary for the well-being of senior citizens and parents.
